We are a small Sunday school group at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Plymouth Meeting, PA.
We have between 2 and 5 girls and 1 or 2 boys in the class. They are between 4 and 11 years old. They love to listen to the stories and color pictures from the stories we read about. They get to make some craft projects and games. What fun!
Few weeks ago we have started reading and learning about the women of the Bible. It is very interesting how important they were. Although, there are not so many, they had very important roles in showing other people, who lived at their times, their faithfulness and strength.
The first one we read about was Ruth.
She was struck by an enormous hardship after the death of her husband in the country of Moab. She was a part of Elimelech's family and as a women at that time, she either had to marry her dead husband's brother or she would be outcasted. She married him, but he died as well.
Her mother in law, Naomi, was in charge of the whole family and because she was a good and caring person, she felt sorry for her daughter in law.
Ruth could save her name by going back to live with her parents. But she decided to stay with Naomi and support her. They went together back to Bethlehem.
There is a part, when Ruth is asking Naomi to be allowed to stay with her. It is a plea full of emotions and love between these two women.
Imagine the distance Ruth and her mother in law had to travel mostly by foot! It took them definitely many years to get back to their home country of Juda. It reminds me of so many immigrants in this country! Ruth and Naomi had to be very strong to survive the journey and lucky as well...
